New Opening Times and Sign Making

Snowy our neighbour of the garden, has agreed to open the garden twice a week and do some activities with the neighbourhood kids. Very exciting to see some new signs in the making. Also its spring time 🙂

Erica verticillata

E. verticillata is extinct in the wild and we are part of a program to help make it popular in urban gardens. This will help increasing its numbers and stabilise the population. Our plant looked a little weak, so we were advised to feed organic Seagro fertilizer for a few weeks until it looks stronger.

Gärten statt Müllplätze – Salt River Nature Park, Kapstadt, Südafrika

Seit April 2019 unterstützen wir in Kapstadt die Salt River Nature Park-Community.
Es geht darum, Müllplätze in Gärten zu verwandeln – in Gemüsegärten, Obstgärten, Blumengärten …
Mit viel Engagement, Eigeninitiative und guten Ideen ist der erste Garten an der Ecke Pope Street – Fenton Street in Kapstadt entstanden.

Das Projekt wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit der BAZ-ART-Organisation realisiert.

  • Der Garten ist ein sicherer Raum für Menschen, Pflanzen, Vögel, Insekten und andere Lebewesen.
  • Gemeinsam wurden hier mehr als 60 lokale Pflanzenarten gepflanzt, sodass sich seit 2019 ein artenreicher Lebensraum entwickeln konnte.
  • Jetzt, im Juli 2020 blühen über 20 Pflanzen und viele Klein- und Kleinstlebewesen besuchen diesen wunderbaren Ort.

Gemeinsam etwas schaffen.

  • Die Pflanzen werden mit Regenwasser versorgt, das in der Nachbarschaft gesammelt und zur Verfügung gestellt wird.
  • Für den Grünabfall wurde ein Komposthaufen angelegt.

  • Gemeinsam mit Watershed Projects hat die Salt River Nature Park-Community eine Ecobrick-Couch aus 204 Ecobricks gebaut.
  • Um den Einfluss des Salt River Nature Parks auf die Vogelpopulation einschätzen zu können, findet ein monatliche Vogelzählung statt.

We are supporting a neighbourhood initiative and urban greening project in Salt River, Cape Town, where a previously derelict plot and dump site was transformed into an indigenous wildlife garden for the community.

Das Projekt wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit der BAZ-ART-Organisation realisiert.

  • The space serves as safe space for humans, plants, birds, insects and other creatures.
  • Over 60 local plant species have been planted together with the community and since the start of the project in April 2019 the space has seen a huge transformation.
  • Now in July 2020 over 20 plant species are flowering and the creatures are moving in at an astonishing pace.

Highlights

  • The garden is fully sustained by rain- and greywater caught and collected in the neighbourhood.
  • A compost pile to process all green ‘waste’ of the garden on site, has been installed.
  • In collaboration with the community and Watershed Projects an ecobrick couch with 204 ecobricks using approximately 170 kg of waste plastic was built.
  • To assess the local bird population as well as the impact of the garden over time, monthly bird monitoring is taking place.
